Diabetes Treatment

While genetics play a role, glucose control depends more on diet and lifestyle than on heredity. Type 2 diabetes is essentially a lifestyle disease, caused by poor diet and lack of exercise. When life habits fall out of sync with biological directives for staying healthy and strong, the body’s mechanism for controlling blood sugar, an important energy source, is disrupted. It becomes progressively deregulated and nutritionally depleted.

Improving glycemic control is essential to long-term health. Computer analysis of the Diabetes Control and Complications trial data, as reported in Clinical Diabetes, shows compelling benefits to be gained from controlling glucose:
•    15.3 additional years free from the onset of substantial micro vascular or neurological complications,
•    an average of 7.7 additional years of sight,
•    an average of 5.8 additional years free from end-stage renal disease,
•    an average of 5.6 years free from lower-extremity amputation.

Additional research has documented further benefits, such as fewer missed work days, fewer days in bed, and a three-fourths reduction in healthcare costs over a three-month period.
