Stop Diabetes Before It Happens

If you have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic, what your doctor is saying is that you're insulin resistant. It's the last step before a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes—which is currently at epidemic levels, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Insulin resistance means that your body's metabolism has undergone a shift that impairs its ability to deal with glucose (blood sugar), due to a gradual loss of sensitivity to insulin. Your pancreas starts cranking out higher levels of insulin to try to handle the escalating glucose levels, and in the process can wear itself out. Once that happens, you've stepped over the threshold to diabetes and are less likely to be able to step back. But, at the insulin-resistant stage, you can certainly turn the situation around and head down a much healthier path.
